Job Description

TerraWest is expanding!  We are currently recruiting for Project Technologists to join our Hazardous Materials department. TerraWest provides clients with hazardous materials and designated substances surveys, worker exposure assessments, and specialized indoor environmental quality services, such as indoor air quality investigations, and water damage/ mould assessment services.

  • Perform hazardous materials assessments on all types of buildings and structures
  • Schedule inspections with clients and contractors
  • Communicate with project managers and supervisory personnel for all aspects of work
  • Conduct on-site inspections during demolition or removal of hazardous materials
  • Perform mould, indoor air quality, water loss, and mould assessments
  • Collect building materials and environmental samples, completion of chains of custody, and submit samples for laboratory analysis
  • Equipment calibration and use
  • Complete proper field forms for reporting purposes
  • Assess worker exposure to selected contaminants
  • Collect of air samples for asbestos and conducting PCM analysis
  • Interpret analytical results
  • Prepare reports and site plans outlining the findings on site and associated recommendations
  • Manage time on projects effectively and efficiently
  • Ensure the well-being and safety of workers and building occupants at project sites
  • Understand proper procedures and project scope of work
  • Prepare daily trip plans to assess health and safety risks and implement mitigation procedures while on site
  • Consulting experience, ideally related to the responsibilities of the position
  • A degree, diploma, certificate or designation in Construction Technology, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, a Bachelor of Science or Applied Science, AHERA, Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH/ROHT) would be an asset
  • A related certificate or license would be an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Report writing, reviewing, and editing skills
  • Must be able to read and understand technical specifications, drawings and reports
  • Ability to work outside of core business hours, including evenings and weekends and some travel
  • Ability to climb 6-8 foot step ladder, and occasionally use a 15-25 foot extension ladder to access roofs
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to wear a respirator as required for work
  • Applicants must have a current and valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle that can safely transport equipment (ladders, tools, totes), and with sufficient insurance.
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

TerraWest continues to grow!  We are expanding our spill response services and require a dedicated Spill Response Manager to join the team.  This role is ideal for the self starter that loves to travel and work outdoors.  You will be responsible for new client development, project management, boots on the ground response work, team management, and continuous improvement of the division providing service throughout Western Canada.  Home base location is negotiable.

  • Negotiating and preparing new contracts with heavy equipment contractors
  • Business development and client liaison
  • Developing and improving existing internal processes and protocols for spill response, health & safety, logistics, and related
  • On the ground field management support in the event of a spill
  • Training and administrative support with clients
  • Related works that support the growth and development of the service
  • Spill response experience, ideally related to the responsibilities of the position

Environmental Technologist – Contaminated Sites

TerraWest is offering an immediate opportunity for an environmental technologist in our Prince George Office. In this position you will gain the fundamental knowledge and skills involved during the completion of environmental investigations specific to contaminated site assessments.

The position will play an important role in the execution of field projects with a contaminated site focus. The role is expected to be split 50/50 between field work and office with variation throughout the year. Field work will commonly require overnight accommodations and work away from the office location.  Common work projects will include the completion of Phase I & II ESAs, Stage 1 & 2 PSIs, DSI, Remediation, Compliance Monitoring and Sampling, Auditing, and related. This is environmental consulting 101. You will further expand on your knowledge of project logistics, client liaison, budgeting, and problem solving.

This position is also eligible to be a part of our developing hazardous materials survey division and would possibly include fieldwork activities and reporting as part of the role.

This role reports directly to the Operations Manager and will involve routine communication with a Project Manager and other team members in the office and company. Training should be expected and will be provided on the job for future tasks to be completed. Some training courses may be required to be taken outside of business hours. Our business is team orientated, but much of the work requires you to be able to work autonomously in the completion of field projects and reporting.

    • Field work and technical data collection, including soil, groundwater, and vapour sampling, with travel as required;

    • Adherence to the Health & Safety program, team communication, basic administrative works, and related support.

Qualifications

 

This role is suited to a junior applicant with 1 to 4 years’ experience.  Job training will be provided however, the minimum qualifications are:

  • Diploma, certificate, or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study (Env. Science, natural sciences including chemistry, geology, biology, or related, Engineering studies, etc.);
  • 1-4 years of relevant work experience in contaminated sites assessment and remediation. Transferrable experience in other fields is considered valuable and will be evaluated upon application;
  • Excellent computer-based skills, including use of Microsoft Office products, email, web browsers, online research, and related. (mandatory);
  • A professional attitude to written email correspondence, texting, phone etiquette, and in-person conversations;
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license with good driving record, including own vehicle; and
  • Hazardous material survey experience is an asset.
