Hazardous Materials Technologist

TerraWest is always interested in hearing from talented people who wish to join our growing team.  Qualified candidates will be notified for pre-screening interviews on an as-needed basis.

We are seeking qualified Hazardous Materials Technologists to join our Hazardous Materials department in Kelowna. TerraWest provides clients with hazardous materials and designated substances surveys, worker exposure assessments, and specialized indoor environmental quality services such as indoor air quality investigations, water damage/mould assessments, and infection control services.

  • Perform hazardous materials assessments on all types of buildings and structures
  • Schedule inspections with clients and contractors
  • Communicate with project managers and supervisory personnel for all aspects of work
  • Conduct on-site inspections during demolition or removal of hazardous materials
  • Perform mould, indoor air quality, water loss, and mould assessments
  • Collect building materials and environmental samples, completion of chains of custody, and submit samples for laboratory analysis
  • Equipment calibration and use
  • Complete proper field forms for reporting purposes
  • Assess worker exposure to selected contaminants
  • Collect off-air samples for asbestos and conducting PCM analysis
  • Interpret analytical results
  • Prepare reports and site plans outlining the findings on-site and associated recommendations
  • Manage time on projects effectively and efficiently
  • Ensure the well-being and safety of workers and building occupants at project sites
  • Understand proper procedures and project scope of work
  • Prepare daily trip plans to assess health and safety risks and implement mitigation procedures while on site
  • Consulting experience, ideally related to the responsibilities of the position
  • A degree, diploma, certificate or designation in Construction Technology, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, a Bachelor of Science or Applied Science, AHERA, Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH/ROHT) would be an asset
  • A related certificate or license would be an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Report writing, reviewing, and editing skills
  • Must be able to read and understand technical specifications, drawings and reports
  • Ability to work outside of core business hours, including evenings and weekends and some travel
  • Ability to climb 6-8 foot step ladder, and occasionally use a 15-25 foot extension ladder to access roofs
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to wear a respirator as required for work
  • Applicants must have a current and valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle that can safely transport equipment (ladders, tools, totes), and with sufficient insurance.
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

The Environmental Professional will provide their knowledge and skills to contaminated site assessments.

The Environmental Professional plays an important role in the completion of field projects with a contaminated site focus. The role is split 50/50 between fieldwork and office, more or less. Fieldwork may require overnight stays outside of town.  Work projects include Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessments, Stage 1 & 2 Preliminary Site Investigations, Detailed Site Investigations, Remediation, Compliance Monitoring and Sampling, Auditing, hazardous materials investigations and related. Operations Manager – Victoria

TerraWest Environmental is searching for an ambitious and growth-minded Operations Manager for our Victoria office.

The Operations Manager plays an important key leadership role in managing the overall growth and development of the regional office and staff.  During the day to day they are responsible for maintaining the existing clients and developing new client business while coordinating the completion of Phase I & II ESAs, Stage 1 & 2 PSIs, Detailed Site Investigations, Remediation, Compliance Monitoring, Auditing, and related contaminated sites services with their regional team.

This role reports directly to the VP of Operations and CEO.  A desire to socialize with new clients, train staff, mentor, and provide excellent leadership is extremely important.

  • Current and good standing with APEGBC, BCIA, ACPBC, ASTTBC or CAB. Note that candidates currently residing outside of BC will be considered, but must be actively registered with their local professional association and be eligible for transfer to provincial organizations;
  • At least 5 years experience in environmental consulting, having actively completed Phase I & II ESAs, Stage 1 & 2 PSIs, DSIs, Remediation, and related work, including a strong baseline of field experience and experience in project management and report preparation, preferably at least 3 of these years working in BC;
  • Proven leadership skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, preferably an extrovert who enjoys socializing, sales, and personal growth;
  • Strong computer skills with an ability to learn new programs quickly;
  • A professional attitude to written and oral communications with clients and colleagues;
  • A positive, friendly, open-minded, team-oriented attitude;
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with clean driving abstract;
  • Willingness to relocate to Victoria or currently local.

Environmental Professional – Contaminated Sites

TerraWest Environmental is offering an immediate opportunity for an ambitious and growth minded junior level Environmental Technologist within our Kelowna office.

The Environmental Technologist will provide their knowledge and skills to contaminated site assessments.

The Environmental Technologist is an important team member in the execution of Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), Stage 1 and 2 Preliminary (PSI) and Detailed Site Investigations (DSI), hazardous materials investigations, environmental remediation, compliance monitoring, auditing, and related. As part of the role you will expand on your knowledge of project logistics, client liaison, budgeting, and problem solving.  This is contaminated sites 101.

The Environmental Technologist reports directly to the Operations Manager, and from time to time a dedicated Project Manager.  A desire to learn and grow is important.  The position is expected to include regular travel to conduct fieldwork.  Training will be provided on the job, with some training outside of business hours. You will often work independently in the completion of field projects and reporting, with support from the team.

Intermediate Hazardous Materials Professional

We are currently searching for an Intermediate Hazardous Materials Professional for our Langford or Nanaimo office. This position is supported by our Hazmat Program Manager. TerraWest provides clients with hazardous materials and designated substances surveys, worker exposure assessments, and specialized indoor environmental quality services, such as indoor air quality investigations, and water damage/ mould assessment services.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform hazardous materials assessments on all types of buildings and structures
  • Schedule inspections with clients and contractors
  • Communicate with client managers and supervisory personnel for all aspects of work
  • Conduct on-site inspections during demolition or removal of hazardous materials
  • Perform hazmat, indoor air quality, water loss, and mould assessments
  • Assess worker exposure to selected contaminants
  • Interpret analytical results
  • Lead and mentor more junior team members
  • Willingness and ability to travel

Qualifications

  • 5 years of consulting experience related to the position
  • A Bachelor of Science or Applied Science degree or diploma. A designation in Construction Technology, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, AHERA, Canadian Registered Safety Professional or Registered Occupational Hygienist or related would be an asset
  • Good report writing, reviewing, and editing skills using Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to:
    • read and understand technical specifications, drawings, and reports
    • work outside of core business hours if the need arises
    • climb ladders and carry up to 40 pounds
    • wear a respirator and other PPE as required for work
  • Applicants must have a clean class 5 driver’s license and a reliable car, truck or SUV that can be insured for company use.
