Operations Manager – Victoria

TerraWest Environmental is searching for an ambitious and growth-minded Operations Manager for our Victoria office.

The Operations Manager plays an important key leadership role in managing the overall growth and development of the regional office and staff.  During the day to day they are responsible for maintaining the existing clients and developing new client business while coordinating the completion of Phase I & II ESAs, Stage 1 & 2 PSIs, Detailed Site Investigations, Remediation, Compliance Monitoring, Auditing, and related contaminated sites services with their regional team.

This role reports directly to the VP of Operations and CEO.  A desire to socialize with new clients, train staff, mentor, and provide excellent leadership is extremely important.

This is the ideal position for someone who:

Job Expectations include:

  • Business Development & Client Liaison (new and existing);
  • Communicating the corporate TerraWest message at a local level;
  • Day to day staff management and maintaining project flow;
  • Project Design, Budgeting and Proposal Preparation;
  • Project Logistics and Execution;
  • Training and Mentoring;
  • Senior technical report review;
  • Coordinating with clients, stakeholders and internal project staff;
  • Fieldwork where necessary;
  • Developing policies and protocols;
  • Acting as main point of contact within the Victoria office; and,
  • Adherence to the Health & Safety program, team communication, basic administrative works, and related support.

Qualifications

The Operations Manager has moderate to strong technical experience in contaminated sites obtained through education and boots on the ground fieldwork, complimented by team based leadership skills such as transparent communication, humour, positivity, open mindedness, and decision making confidence.  At TerraWest our leadership group works as a team, while each being independently responsible for the health and development of their region.  This role is best suited for those who are calm under pressure, enjoy the autonomy of growing and managing their own “micro business”, and have the personal responsibility to take action for positive change.

  • Current and good standing with APEGBC, BCIA, ACPBC, ASTTBC or CAB. Note that candidates currently residing outside of BC will be considered, but must be actively registered with their local professional association and be eligible for transfer to provincial organizations;
  • At least 5 years experience in environmental consulting, having actively completed Phase I & II ESAs, Stage 1 & 2 PSIs, DSIs, Remediation, and related work, including a strong baseline of field experience and experience in project management and report preparation, preferably at least 3 of these years working in BC;
  • Proven leadership skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, preferably an extrovert who enjoys socializing, sales, and personal growth;
  • Strong computer skills with an ability to learn new programs quickly;
  • A professional attitude to written and oral communications with clients and colleagues;
  • A positive, friendly, open-minded, team-oriented attitude;
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with clean driving abstract;
  • Willingness to relocate to Victoria or currently local.

Environmental Technologist – Contaminated Sites

The Environmental Technologist will provide their knowledge and skills to contaminated site assessments.

We are seeking a motivated Environmental Technologist with at least 1 year of relevant experience. This role focuses on environmental site assessments, remediation planning, and compliance monitoring. It provides opportunities to develop expertise in field work, data collection and reporting and will expand your knowledge of project management while contributing to the growth of TerraWest’s Alberta operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Completion of Phase I, II and III Environmental Site Assessments, Hazardous Materials Assessments and related duties;
  • Field work and technical data collection, including soil, groundwater, and vapour sampling, with travel as required;
  • Client and subcontractor liaison, scheduling, and logistics;
  • Report preparation, including data review and supporting document creation; and
  • Adherence to the Health and Safety program, team communication, basic administrative works, and related support.

Qualifications

This role is considered a junior position within the organization, and comprehensive training will be provided; however, the minimum qualifications are:

    • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Engineering, or a related field.
    • At least 1 year of relevant work experience including field sampling;
    • Physically fit and able to lift up to 50 lbs.;
    • Excellent computer-based skills, including use of Microsoft Office products, email, web browsers, online research, and related;
    • A professional attitude to written and oral communications with clients and colleagues;
    • A positive, friendly, team-oriented attitude;
    • Comfortable working in varying conditions in various settings;
    • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean record and access to a vehicle;
    • Eligible to pursue a relevant professional designation (e.g., P.Ag, P.Bio, P.Eng); and
    • Experience in the commercial and industrial industry is considered an asset.

Intermediate Environmental Professional – Contaminated Sites

We are seeking a motivated Intermediate Environmental Professional with at least 3 years of professional experience, 2 of those years in contaminated site assessments. This role focuses on environmental site assessments, remediation planning, and compliance monitoring. It provides opportunities to develop expertise in project management and will expand your knowledge of project logistics, client liaison, budgeting, and problem solving while contributing to the growth of TerraWest’s Alberta operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Phase I, II and III environmental site assessments, compliance monitoring, and related contaminated sites services;
  • Assist with hazardous materials investigations and cross-train as necessary;

Qualifications

This role is considered an intermediate position within the organization, and comprehensive training will be provided; however, the minimum qualifications are:

    • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Engineering, or a related field;
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in environmental consulting, preferably with experience with environmental site assessments, soil sampling, groundwater monitoring and site remediation;
    • Familiarity with Alberta regulatory frameworks and environmental guidelines;
    • Possess or pursuing a relevant professional designation (e.g., P.Ag, P.Bio, P.Eng);
    • Ability to work independently and in a small group setting;
    • Strong communication and problem-solving skills;
    • Proficient in relevant software and adaptable to new tools;

Environmental Project Manager

We are searching for an ambitious and growth-minded Environmental Project Manager to join our team in the Nanaimo office. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to play a key leadership role in shaping the future of our environmental consulting services.

What we are looking for in You

As an Environmental Project Manager, you will take on a pivotal leadership role in delivering high-quality environmental consulting services. You will oversee and manage a variety of projects with technical precision, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and maintaining strong client relationships.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) with attention to detail and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting and overseeing Stage 1 and 2 Preliminary Site Investigations (PSIs) and Detailed Site Investigations (DSIs) to evaluate contamination and environmental risk.
  • Developing, managing, and monitoring project budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within financial constraints.
  • Managing hazardous materials investigations, including asbestos, lead, and mold assessments.
  • Designing and implementing effective environmental remediation plans, overseeing remediation projects to ensure they meet client and regulatory standards.
  • Conducting compliance monitoring, audits, and inspections to ensure adherence to environmental regulations and policies.
  • Providing expertise in preparing and securing regulatory permits, instruments, and approvals, including liaison with relevant agencies.
  • Fostering strong relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders to build trust and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Contributing to business development by identifying opportunities for expanding services and supporting proposal preparation.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior staff to promote professional growth and maintain high standards across the team.
  • Attitude: A positive, friendly, open-minded, and team-oriented approach to work and collaboration.
  • Education and Membership: A Diploma or Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field. Active membership or eligibility for membership with a recognized professional organization is required (AScT, P.Eng., P.Geo., R.P.Bio., P.Chem., P.Ag., or equivalent).
  • Experience: 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in environmental consulting, including at least 3 years in BC. Direct expertise in contaminated site assessments and remediation is essential.

  • Versatility: A willingness to cross-train and acquire additional skills as needed to support diverse project requirements.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong computer skills, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software and programs.
